Calculation Logic

Step 1: Calculate Tax on (Non-Agri Income + Agri Income)

Step 2: Calculate Tax on (Basic Exemption Limit + Agri Income)

Tax Payable = Step 1 - Step 2

What is Partial Integration?

Many people believe that agricultural income in India is entirely tax-free. This is only partially true. Under Section 10(1) of the Income Tax Act, it is exempt from tax. However, the government introduced the concept of Partial Integration to prevent rich farmers who also have non-agricultural income from abusing the lower tax slabs.

When does it apply?

  • Condition 1: Net Agricultural income must be greater than ₹5,000.
  • Condition 2: Non-Agricultural income must be greater than the Basic Exemption Limit (₹4,00,000 in New Regime, or ₹2,50,000 in Old Regime for under 60 yrs).

If BOTH conditions are met, the integration rules apply. If you only have agricultural income (even ₹10 Crores) and zero non-agricultural income, you pay NO tax.

How does it work?

By adding your agricultural income to your non-agricultural income in "Step 1", the government pushes your non-agricultural income into a higher tax bracket (like 20% or 30%). Then, in "Step 2", they calculate tax on just the agricultural income + basic exemption and subtract it. The net result is that your agricultural income itself isn't taxed, but it causes your non-agricultural income to be taxed at a much higher rate.

Common Mistakes & Pitfalls

Dairy & Poultry

Income from dairy farming, poultry, and animal husbandry is NOT agricultural income. It is fully taxable business income. Do not declare it as exempt.

Corporate Farming

If you farm through a Private Limited Company, partial integration does NOT apply. The company's agricultural income is purely 100% exempt from tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is agricultural income fully tax-free in India?
Under Section 10(1) of the Income Tax Act, agricultural income is completely exempt from income tax. However, if you have non-agricultural income as well, the agricultural income is used to push your non-agricultural income into a higher tax slab. This is called 'Partial Integration'.
2. When does the Partial Integration rule apply?
The rule applies only if TWO conditions are met: (1) Your Net Agricultural Income is greater than ₹5,000, AND (2) Your Non-Agricultural Income exceeds the Basic Exemption Limit (e.g., ₹4,00,000 under the New Regime).
3. What if my non-agricultural income is less than ₹4,00,000?
If your non-agricultural income is below the basic exemption limit (₹4 Lakhs under New Regime), the Partial Integration rule does NOT apply. Your entire agricultural income, even if it is ₹50 Lakhs, remains 100% tax-free, and you pay zero tax.
4. Who is subject to this integration rule?
The partial integration rule applies to Individuals, HUFs, AOPs, BOIs, and Artificial Juridical Persons. It does NOT apply to Companies, Firms, or LLPs. (For companies, agricultural income is purely exempt without integration).
5. What qualifies as agricultural income?
Rent/revenue derived from agricultural land in India, income from agricultural operations (tilling, sowing), and income from farm buildings in the immediate vicinity of the land.
6. Is income from a dairy farm or poultry farming considered agricultural income?
No. Income from dairy farming, poultry farming, animal husbandry, and dividend from a company engaged in agriculture are NOT considered agricultural income. They are fully taxable as business income.
7. How do I calculate Net Agricultural Income?
Net Agricultural Income = Total Revenue from agricultural produce minus Total Expenses incurred for agricultural operations (seeds, labor, fertilizers, tractor fuel).
8. Does this apply under the New Tax Regime?
Yes, partial integration of agricultural income applies under both the Old Tax Regime and the New Tax Regime. The basic exemption limit used in the formula simply changes (₹4 Lakhs for New Regime).
